Experimenting

Bit more messing around with photoshop with this image, some of the images work, but not as final pieces. I found it pretty hard to get a finished look from the piece due to the sketchyness of my image and my inadequence with photoshop. I like how some of them look but in future I will either produce or go for a image more suited to my skill base.

EDIT:
Found and old drawing of mine online and thought it looked like it could easily be manipulated and just wanted to quick go round to see if i can use what i've learnt on something else.

From this image I wanted to create a new image from the previous drawings on this page. Only a quick exerisize but it's always worth experimenting. So I cropped and cleaned up certain parts of this drawing to create a smaller, more digital drawing.

One was simply created by cropped, moving and cleaning up part of the other images then merging them together, Also taken the letters from 'FREEDOM' I created the word 'DOOM' I thought adding colour would make it more interesting but in the end i found the black and white image is much more efficient and the colour palette lends itself much more to the feel of the illustration.

Photoshop stuff

2nd week of photoshop tutorials. Today we learned how to mask; layer; colour and use our selection tools again from last week. Through importing textures; playing around with layer filters and the opacity of the layers you can radically transform any illustration. I also cleaned up a new image today because i felt It has much more potential then my pervious scanned image and it also helped my remember what I learned in photoshop last week. I'm still undecided about photoshop in my work as of yet, it's a useful tool and no doubt should it be overlooked but I still feel like i prefer more tangible materials.

OUIL403-Studio Brief 3

 NEW BRIEF.

We were given a text, each randomised. We were told to take it away; read it then choose 3 words within the text to sum up the text. Then we had to bring in 5 images to use to a group task so find a new way of generating ideas. We used the main words we had then pasted them to other members of the class to word associate with our previous words. Did this 4/5 times so we had almost stories we had to use to draw from.

So in the end after taking notes while drawing I've got a few images. We have to create 3 image. 1st response 200mm x 200mm; 2nd response 290mm x 105mm; 3rd response 105mm x 290mm. We then took our ideas and had a peer review so get a current analysis and choose our 3 strongest ideas.

FEEDBACK
Strengths
Images so far are effective; able to tell which article it was; funny/clever ideas; Wide range of ideas; good compositions; well considered; strong opinion on article; Range of visual elements

Suggestions
Start using colour; experiment with media; try mixing up ideas; vary compositions; More relate-able characters; Think about which characters you want to look like demons and why

Sketchbook development

Done quite a few sketchbook drawings over the past week but these pages I feel are are the most interesting because of just trying something new. I used Ink like I usually do, but no wash, no colour mixing just the ink on its own and instead of using a traditional applicator like a brush; Instead I used the end of a pencil (A seen above)  which for me created really interesting weight of line and I think this kind of application could really benefit my style.

Initial Project.

Final Image - Feedback
Pros:
  • Good use of media
  • Solid line work and messier Ink is a nice contrast
  • Clever use of using Initials of the person
  • Nice overall image
Cons:
  • Centre astronaut
  • Add a background. Planet; Stars etc
  • Try using mixed media

Sketchbook book development 17/10/13

Here are some scans from my sketchbook of pages that were somewhat turning points in the development of some of the ideas I've been working on. Each the result of many of tried and tested Ideas within my sketchbook these ideas have something in them that changed the way I will view my final outcome  even if it was only 5% of the actual image.

Sketchbook development towards S.B 1
After looking through all my ideas for S.B 1 so far I believe the space theme is working out the best and wanted to use an space image for my final piece, so I went into my sketchbook and decided to practice ideas.

Even though I feel much more confident with the space ideas, I am still practicing other ideas in my sketchbook to keep my options open.

Week Beginning 07/10/2013

This week was difficult, like it sucked balls difficult. First things first we get a questionnaire; well fill it in; that sucked. Then we partner up with a randomly chosen classmate and sorta interview each other about how we answered our questionnaires. That part was good. I got partnered with Astrid. After taking notes about each other we choose 10 words, then we started drawing 64 TINY DRAWINGS! TWICE! That was hard but  really useful. Loads of drawings; quick; erratic just taking notes by drawing. Tones of ideas some I wouldn't of gotten otherwise. After we chose our best ones, redrew them, still quick. Blew them up and here we are. Waiting for next week to take it further.

EVAL: It's a hard, frustrating; pain staking process but it has its advantages and I think everyone can take something away from this. I feel i had it a little easier than some in that my skill-set relates to very quickly drawn, gnarly conversations. I did still find it hard but I know the final images I've got to work with now I wouldn't of had if we hadn't of gone about it the way we did.

Final Presented Piece

Through all the experiments; feedback; pier reviews and tutor feedback this was the final design I went with. I believe the whole anarchy of the piece fits together in all its elements, the use of ink and splatter with erratic lines and what appears to be no composition makes the whole piece seem very almost not thought out and archaic. I don't like it though..
Pier Review.

Again we did a pier view on each others work (Which really makes you feel out your depth) We had to draw on 6 scraps of paper 3 eyes for best atheistic pieces and 3 thought bubbles for best conveyed idea. Again I feel everyone was a bit too kind but it's always nice to get feedback and nice comments off everyone and  I always appreciate it.
Process.
Just a quick snapshot of progress on how I went about creating this peice, I usually lay the ink; watercolour down first to keep everything loose and easy then when its dry quickly go over it with fine liner, using a lightbox. Then back over again throwing inks over the top.

Monday Crit Feedback

Monday crit was the same method as our Summer 10 feedback, we walked around looked at each others work, left; comments; crtis; advice and praise if due. Which then lead us onto our next project of creating and A2 piece based off everything we had done so far around our summer brief and group critz.
Some comments
  • Interesting style
  • Style suits the conflict  - stabbing the page

Summer 10 Feedback

After every one left their summer 10 projects out we all ha to have a group crit. in where we talked around and left crits;comments and general feedback on other students work we found interesting; that worked well or just generally caught your eye. I got some helpful and in my opinion for too kind feedback of everyone, Mainly about the use of lift and media insight with the actual designs at hand.

Garment

'EAT MY BALLS'
We had to create a t-shirt or garment based on our summer 10 project and the 10 images that we produced. The above image was my result. The Ink bled far too much so this could be seen as a 'first draft' of the project but it adds to the intense and erratic nature of the piece and goes well with the line work. If I were to do this project again i would of gone for a smaller; more concentrate image and placed it upon the front of the top but t his will do.

Summer 10

Our summer brief consisted of being asked 10 questions which we had to visually answer. It was meant to be presented in a 10x10 manner in the brief but from not reading the brief correctly I produced my 10 images on one piece of paper instead. Even though I like the composition and how everything fits around themselves, I should of read the blog properly and produced the image in 10, 10x10 illustrations.
