OUIL603 - STUDIO BREIF 2 - COMPS

In the first slideshow has my boards and the second has titles on the final EPS so we know which songs they're related too.

This brief has not been as well documented as the rest on my blog, this is simply because It was finished quickly then pushed aside becauseI I forgot about it. I feel I noted the paintings and why they were imported but Im not sure I made clear that I applied them to secret 7.

Secret7 was the first thing I did for this module as it was free easy and allowed me the freedom to play which in turn is where this new process of working arose from, so with out this brief I wouldn't of found a completely new and enjoyable way of working. One having the images I decided that for the final mock ups it would be a good idea to add them to a cover sleeve just too see if they worked, some worked a lot better than others but as a set and as singles I think they're all strong piece. I enjoy the use of negative space with these painting I think it makes them appear much more delicate that forces someone to look closer and more carefully at them only to discover that the images themselves all though carefully crafted and naive in application or neither in there nature and are of quite dark and sometimes evil imagery

BOGSQUAD COLOURING BOOK

BOGSQUAD CONTACT AND COMMISSION

BOGSQUAD has a few thousand (6,600) more followers than me, 7,000 might not be the pinnacle of instagram fame but the guy has a brand with followers and website with products that people buy into which is obviously something I want to do but in the long run, better. Anyway he asked me to do a page for an adult colouring book he's doing a run for based on blood/guts and B-Movie monsters. The way I saw it, this is a super easy brief for me. It doesn't require much if any research and it's free advertising for me. I don't get much for doing it £30 and free t-shirt, but £30 and a free shirt for 30minutes work isn't something I'm going to be too fussed about.

Anyway, I chose Pumpkinhead.

Since it's a colouring book, I don't even need to do anything but line work for this, it's super easy.
Only ask is that you include one of his bog dweller characters (which was also kinda optional)

Zine//Breif - WE LIKE GARDENING

A collaboration zine with me and a photographer, the theme is loosely based around plants, and by loosley anything can be in it as long as there's at least a blade of grass near it. It was nice to collaborate and not have to do as much work for it. Its also interesting to see how my work looks when sat next too another form of art. The Juxtapoz in this zine really interests me and it's something I'd like to do a lot more of in the future.

This Zine is also in full colour, since i'm not going to be the one printing it I decided to add colour picture which meant I could use some of the paintings I did since when made into greyscale they loose a lot of their pop

This was a very interesting review, it was less about the aesthetic of my work and more about how to put everything in order to get the most out of these next few weeks and really push my briefs forward. So now i've managed to get 5 full briefs set up, all with different time frames and a range of possible ideas. There were some similarities with Patricks review so things like making my work bigger and working in space are definite considerings I need to think about.

S7 - TWO DOWN

This one came from a mixture of my initial sketchbook scamp; a new way of painting and a  little bit of photoshop manipulation. The scamp in question is the dude with flowers coming out of his back.

It started out as that initial sketch and I decided I wanted to try the new way of painting i've been doing since i'm really really enjoying doing it and it's two birds who one stone.

The composition changed ever so slightly but I preferred him fully kneeling over, when I was editing it into the final dimentions of secret7 I just came to me that the song I was submitting it for was CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue, so with a bit of hue/Saturation changing I think it made it more suitable.

I don't think I'm going to do the rest of my secret7 submissions like this, I want to do some that are more similar to my usual way of working, And I think this style of painting can be used for a personal project, since it's still in its early proceedings we will have to see.

S7 - ONE DOWN

I did this one for John Lennon's - Imagine, it does relate to the song, kind of. Well it does to me anyway. I got the idea from one of my previously posted scamps and then decided I was going to try and paint it the reduced style I talked about in this post (apologies for the cut up scan, it was too big for the scanner)

After a failed attempt or two, I got the effect I wanted. I them took the painting into photoshop; cleaned it up and bit a ever so slightly altered the colours to make it brighter; put it into the right dimensions and thats that.

S7 Scamps

Secret7 is super interesting to do since there's no restorations on the actual content of the artwork; just that it can't give the artist or track away. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the track which makes it super fun to do.

I started by just listening to all the tracks a few times and just doodling in the sketchbook while listening to them over and over.

It was a lot harder than I thought, well some of it was. Some were quite easy to produce ideas for some weren't quite as easy but It's not a bad starting point.

Secret 7

Secret 7 have their annual competition to design sleeves for 7 randomly chosen songs, anyone can enter and it's a super fun competition.

You have to design an album sleeve for 1-7 of the chosen songs, the dimensions have to be correct and you can have the name of the artist of song on any part of it but that's really it.

CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue
Etta James - At Last
Jack Garrett - Worry
The Jam - Art School
John Lennon - Imagine
May Richter - Dream 3
Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better
