SB COLLABORATIVE FINAL

In the end time became a killing factor and although we hit everything the brief asked for, only one of the photos was to the stand I would of really enjoyed. I real reason I feel for this is we simply had too many ideas and by trying to do them all; it effected our final outcome. In future I believe it would have been better to have stuck to the original plan; even though we didn't like it; tweaked it a bit for the brief and just soldiered through it.

Done.

SB COLLABORATIVE

These were the two current options we had for our brief, as well as one with an animation. We had to go scout out location and it was becoming tiresome and time consuming and quite hard to work with weather and getting the right equipment out. On top of that, with our already busy schedules finding time to animate everything seemed like a waste of time; and we were doing more work and stressing out for little gain. Then we decided to have a change of topic, something that had been staring us in the face for awhile. Our house. We're all young subcultures in our own rights and our rooms reflect us the best anything can, while showing subculture but not being cliche in the slightest. So we got our photographer friend to help us out; give us advice and we set off to make it happen.

SB 2 - COLLABORATIVE

Photoshoot.
The plan was always to have models instead of just images of the interest, not only would it be very difficult to take a photo of the clothes like that since according the brief the images cannot be collages of composites and it just makes more sense when working with subculture to have models.

The actual pictures will be taken on location but we have some lights and live with some photography students to we asked if they could give us a quick helping hand with just setting some lights up.

Setup.

Contact sheet.

Photos.
As you can see with the green screen it makes it much easier to edit the background so we can get a better of it all, as previously stated the final shoot with be on location and will adhere to the briefs specifications this again is just to help me and Elliot have a better understanding of things.

The last image is a still of what one could look like if an animation was over the top and complete, Elliot is still working on them currently this is the best we can show for now.

Boards:

Peer Feedback:
Good.

  • Style is consistent
  • Animations could work really well - Impact
  • Like the link with technology
  • Coloured images look 'sick as fuck'
  • Strong visual quality
  • QR code is interesting
  • Striking
Improvement.
  • Not sure what the brief is
  • Coloured images don't fit with the rest of the 'look'
  • Brief needs explaining
  • Consider using colour on all mock ups
  • Storyboard maybe to make animations more clear?
  • Background is too dark/distracting

Eval.
  • We need to make the background less intense
  • Get rid of the coloured images
  • Add text and explain the brief
  • Maybe add a story board.

SB 2 - COLLABORATIVE

Working through some more ideas, as to not write anything off and so we don't actually miss anything.

These were a little more edgy and intense that the previous images, We couldn't decide it f we liked them  or not but we kept them anyway as we still need to have a group crit, so it's best to keep them and get other peoples opinion on them

Here we decided to play around with text and think of a catch phrase. We're not exactly settled on it yet but we're still at the playing around stage.
WHY THE QR CODE?!
The brief does mention this could also be an online brief aslong as it still works as 3 prints in the end. So since Elliot can animate we're going to animate certain icons over the clothes too see how it looks and If the QR code is scanned it will take you to a post where it's a looping animation.

SB 2 - COLLOBRATIVE

First response.
We weren't sure how exactly we wanted this to look, So we decided the best way would be to play around with photoshop and get a better idea of how things could look in the end.

Putting this together really helped shape our ideas of whats next. We think the juxtaposition of dark clothes and light background and vise versa, works well and it's quite a popular thing in underground and fashion photography at the moment. It also gives it and edgy; urban feel which I for one think suits the brief very well. The idea of a warehouse esc background was mainly inspired by a bit of research and this photo was the clincher

SB - COLLABORATIVE

We've been uming and aring about how we're going to do this, how we're going to use our skills with the brief to create something unique and effectively something that isn't awful. I was just browsing my personal blog earlier for some kind of ideas, without holding out much hope but then I saw something that sparked an idea.

My blog is just made up of anything I find aesthetically pleasing but the ones that caught my eye were these two images:

I think it might be good to get a model to wear all white/all black so it's almost a blank canvas then just 1 or two items that hint at a subculture and who they are instead of a cliche outfit as it were.

SB 2 - COLLABORATIVE

Whats the brief asking?

  • Capture the essence and energy of subculture in a series of 3 images
  • They should work as a group and stand alone images
  • Have a real point of view for your images
  • Avoid cliches
  • Consider reflect subject style
  • Unique twist
  • Literal of abstract
  • Originate don't imitate
  • 3 Strong photographs that will work in print, cannot be collages or composites

First Thoughts
It's different for me, being it's actually a photography brief not illustration or animation but me and Elliot are confident we can bring something creative to this a photographer might miss. Avoid cliches makes things interesting, you can't just dress someone as a punk and call it a day, you have to play this smart and play it right. I'm excited for what we can come up with

SB2 - COLLOBRATIVE

First things first, we needed to choose a brief either from YCN or D&AD. I was already quite exhausted of YCN so I focused mainly on D&AD briefs.

My choices:
i-D  - sub-culture D&AD
SyFy - Rebranding YCN
Vice - 15 Second Ident D&AD

Elliots:
SyFy - Re-branding YCN
Alice in Wonderland - YCN
Interflora - YCN

In the end we decided on my choice of i-D because it was something that seemed very manageable and also something we were in a chance of winning. A point we were told was try to go for briefs other illustrators/Animators wouldn't be going for so you have the edge of the competition. Also i'm currently writing an essay on subculture so that ties in very well for me.

STUDIO BRIEF 2 - COLLABORATIVE

We were tasked with choosing another creative to work with, It could be in our own discipline or outside of it. We were also encouraged not to work with our friends. Distractions an all. However, I live with an animator/model maker, who's in my educational year; is a great animator and we're friends. It seems absurd not too. The reasons were simple, we both have skills the other lacks; we already know we work well together and we live together so getting together to do work isn't exactly going to be hard work.
