This was a very interesting review, it was less about the aesthetic of my work and more about how to put everything in order to get the most out of these next few weeks and really push my briefs forward. So now i've managed to get 5 full briefs set up, all with different time frames and a range of possible ideas. There were some similarities with Patricks review so things like making my work bigger and working in space are definite considerings I need to think about.

Its nice going into a tutorial with only work and no ideas and then leaving with a plan of action. I thought it was a really helpful tutorial to give myself some direction and but my work in a better perspective. It's always nice to hear that someone likes your work to an extent as well, confidence is key. Patrick but some really good ideas in my head and I'm ready to try and push myself and give my practice a little more direction and development.

New Paintings
I've done 10 of these paintings now, which is a good amount to take a step back and analyse where exactly its going and why. I need to give it some kind of direction. So here i'm going to post slides of the paintings straight out of the sketchbook and then another slide of the finalised designs.
There's a range of possibilities for these, I could decide to do 30 and make it into a book; Postcards; Prints; 8 a time and go back to making zines or I need to consider going away from printed and paper and moving on to something else. Need a think.
Stickers.
I've already spoken about these stickers on my PPP blog here.
I think stickers are a very simple and easy way to get people looking at your work since your can stick most stickers just about everywhere. And they can work as good little freebie incentives when selling things online and what not. Both stickers come from a very similar start point, I just decided to do it two different way since my practice seems to be splintering in styles but keep the same themes among it's different tendrils, which is good?
Seeing the dott work bat gave me and idea however, since it was very similar to the reaper in style, I figured It would only take me a few minutes to quickly spruce up and old idea.
FRONT AND BACK DESIGN YE?!
S7 - TWO DOWN
This one came from a mixture of my initial sketchbook scamp; a new way of painting and a little bit of photoshop manipulation. The scamp in question is the dude with flowers coming out of his back.
It started out as that initial sketch and I decided I wanted to try the new way of painting i've been doing since i'm really really enjoying doing it and it's two birds who one stone.
The composition changed ever so slightly but I preferred him fully kneeling over, when I was editing it into the final dimentions of secret7 I just came to me that the song I was submitting it for was CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue, so with a bit of hue/Saturation changing I think it made it more suitable.
I don't think I'm going to do the rest of my secret7 submissions like this, I want to do some that are more similar to my usual way of working, And I think this style of painting can be used for a personal project, since it's still in its early proceedings we will have to see.
Reaper
I had an idea and an urge to make something pain staking, or at least a lot more laborious and intensive than my usual way of working. I think it was to prove something to myself that I could more than anything and it seems lots of tiny tiny dots was the answer. So I took this finished Grim, took it into photoshop and began to play around with branding and product. Since with one image you can go on to make a whole range of things.
New work
These two images are responsible for a new way or working I'm deciding to undertake, I'm too 100% in what direction Im going to be taking it but I really enjoy making work like this, it takes me a longer than usual and it's a lot more delicate way of working for me but I'd like to see where I can take this.
These are the first two images, since these two I've done one more. They way of working was actually inspired by Frank Carter, an artist I was looking at, you can find the related post here
This is a rough scan of the 3rd image, I then this image like the first two, used photoshop to clean everything up and re-size it as well as adding titles to all of them, I think now they all work together but also the titles help them as stand alone work e.g Prints; postcards etc
S7 - ONE DOWN
I did this one for John Lennon's - Imagine, it does relate to the song, kind of. Well it does to me anyway. I got the idea from one of my previously posted scamps and then decided I was going to try and paint it the reduced style I talked about in this post (apologies for the cut up scan, it was too big for the scanner)
After a failed attempt or two, I got the effect I wanted. I them took the painting into photoshop; cleaned it up and bit a ever so slightly altered the colours to make it brighter; put it into the right dimensions and thats that.
S7 Scamps
Secret7 is super interesting to do since there's no restorations on the actual content of the artwork; just that it can't give the artist or track away. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the track which makes it super fun to do.
I started by just listening to all the tracks a few times and just doodling in the sketchbook while listening to them over and over.
It was a lot harder than I thought, well some of it was. Some were quite easy to produce ideas for some weren't quite as easy but It's not a bad starting point.
Secret 7
You have to design an album sleeve for 1-7 of the chosen songs, the dimensions have to be correct and you can have the name of the artist of song on any part of it but that's really it.
CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue
Etta James - At Last
Jack Garrett - Worry
The Jam - Art School
John Lennon - Imagine
May Richter - Dream 3
Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better
Z4
I'm enjoying making these, I can't decide if the greyscale takes away from the original work or adds to it, lets just say it makes it different that's easy enough.
The final double spread of this zine is a little bit different, it's a 'reductive' painting I've done with acrylic, a media and style I don't use a lot. It took me a lot longer than I'd like to admit for a sketchbook page but I liked the end result and I'd like to move forward with this.
I took the orignial colour scan, and decided to clean it up on photoshop.
I really like this outcome, I like the contrast on just a white back, it's a lot less busy than my usual work but I think it carries a lot of narrative with it also. It's defiantly something i'll be exploring further.

Z3
This ones a bit of a cheat since i've actually already uploaded it. I made this for my COP submission but completely forgot about it but now I remember and it's defiantly a Zine and it's defiantly my work so It's going into this brief as well.
It combines a lot of elements from custom painting; photography; look-book and montage work. I personally really like how this one turned out.
BAD HABITS
I made this one before I figured the page thing….

Z2
The exact premise as last time with the exception of a double page spread instead of all single page spreads. As low-fi and throw away as they may appear, and I imagined it could be argued there's not a lot too them, For how I work I do think they're important. Not as a money making machine, i'd sell these for £1-£3 so it's not going to make me rich but as far as my state of mind it's a good thing.
It takes work from my sketchbook; work which is very 'me' it's very fluid and playful and fun but no one would never get to see any of it, all these images would just stay locked away behind the front pages of m sketchbook so in that regard I think these Zines are important.
Also figured out the presentation to page problem, it was me being an idiot.
Z1
Using InDesign and Abode Photoshop I edited some of the pages in my sketchbook, mainly just to greyscale to save costs. I changed some of the contrast to make the pages look darker and some more interesting marks from other pages came through which I think makes it appear more interesting.
I've decided to title the first one 'With My Mind, it seemed appropiate.
Im going to make a few more like this just from my sketchbooks and then take a step back and see if something more interesting could be happening, or a step back to at least see where it stands.
When exporting it to a PDF and uploading to ISSU it seemed to merge pages so it's more of a slideshow than a book, I'm not sure if thats just for WEB though so i'll have to look more into why it's doing that or how avoidable it is.
Zines
After taking to Jon about making zines and him looking through my sketchbook he said a lot of the pages on their own stand out so it could simply scan in the more interesting pages from my sketchbook and make zines out of them, at least for a start to get the ball rolling so before I pick and choose certain pages I thought i'd upload the same presentation on my PPP blog of pages from my sketchbook.
My first zine or two will likely be compromised of pages from these two sketchbooks just so I actually start to put these things together.
